Yogis of Karma - Melissa Pointdexter

Every member of our community has something unique and inspiring to bring to the table and is fighting their own internal battles at the same time. That is what is so great about coming into the present moment on our mats - a place of no expectations, no standards, coming to a place where we are all equal. So grateful Melissa stumbled upon us, and is now a volunteer and blog contributor, as well as a dear friend. Her energy and excitement about her practice is contagious, and we are so fortunate to have her as apart of this tribe. -Tiffany

Every time I roll out my mat and set my intentions, mine always seems to have the common theme. My intention is always to clear my mind and give back something great to my body that I overwork. I find myself in a brain-fog from stress and overworking, being a full-time student and working full time between two jobs takes a huge toll on me. A little over two years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease commonly known as lupus. With this huge change in my life it brought extreme anxiety along with all of my symptoms. Karma yoga has helped my manage a great amount of my symptoms and reduce my anxiety. I have gained an even greater positive outlook and being able to have the power to eliminate negativity, especially toxic people. With just one simple hour class I know I am doing good for my mind, my body, and my soul.
My first experience with Karma Yoga was when I came across a Facebook event for a $5 class. I had always wanted to get into yoga for all of its amazing benefits, but could never find a place that I enjoyed and that was affordable. Little did I know with Karma Yoga I was also gaining a great group of people passionate about the community and helping others; a new group of friends, supporters, and like-minded people.
